Since the year 2000, the animal care and rehabilitation facility established by Louise Joubert has been funded by the non-profit SanWild Wildlife Trust. Our mission is to provide true rehabilitation for rescued animals and, whenever possible, to release them back into the wild where they belong. SanWild serves as a crucial final phase in the rehabilitation process, offering a direct release site—a safe, natural habitat where animals can adapt and thrive.

Our Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is not open to day visitors, as we adhere to strict protocols to minimize human interaction and prevent human imprinting. However, participants in our volunteer program gain limited access to assist with feeding, observation, and other supervised activities, offering a unique opportunity to contribute while respecting the animals’ needs for a successful return to the wild.

Many of the animals under our care come from zoos, circuses, and other rehabilitation centers across South Africa. These centers focus on healing and rehabilitating orphaned or injured wildlife but may not have a suitable release site. SanWild partners with these centers, providing our 3,000-hectare sanctuary as a safe and secure place for animals rescued from other locations.

At SanWild, we take care of the stress and security, allowing the animals to focus on their transition, while we provide them with the best chance for a successful and sustainable life in the wild. Our goal is to ensure that every animal in our care has a forever home, where they can live freely and independently, far from human interference.
